Answers: make sure you are hydrated...dehydration makes you veins weak and harder to stick.
Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and try to remain calm. When you get excited, nervous or afraid, your sympathetic nervous system dilates and your veins constrict. Your doctor may be able to give you a mild sedative beforehand... or possibly not, depending on the test you are having done.
Also, request that an anesthesiologist insert your IV if possible. They have the most training and are generally the best at hitting a vein on the first try.
Good luck and best wishes!
Hi Linda,
I have the same problem even with my mainline & others so sometimes they take blood samples from the top of wrist, like
right above you're thumb a ways, it's a roller but thick. But, as for taking some vitamen/or? there's nothing I know of sorry. I
go for testing & pray for an experienced nurse who can do it
through a glove.

I know of some tricks
For blood work if you have a good vein but it just hurts you can use an ice pack for five to ten min's before to help numb the pain but if you have small veins that are hard to get do not do this as it will make them smaller
Now for I.V.'s it make the vein stand up there are some tricks
Use heat get a very warn cloth or you can use a hot water bottle but make sure that the water you fill it with is not hot enough to burn you even if you put your hand directly in the water. Keep your arm straight down so it blood will stay in the arm longer and that will expand the veins
Not all nurses do this but once you take the heat off and they have the band on slap your arm where the veins are it will make them stand up. And keep your arm down.
Make sure that they tape them very good again some nurses do not like to use allot of tape because it is hard to get off but I think it is worth it.
This one I can not stress enough when some nurses know that you do not like needles they try to be gentle and because of that they end up hurting you worse. Tell them just to go for it and when they are not trying to be cautous they usally get it on the first try.
Now for some herbs that in the long run can help with vein health
Calendula will help with circulation and in the long run some people find that their veins are bigger and stronger
This spice also has as antibiotic action and promote the painless healing of minor wounds by reducing unflammation and pus formation it is useful for alleviating skin ulcers, burns and bruises and for reducing scarring.
To use as a tea pour one cup of boiling water over two tsp. of dried calendula petals steep for ten min's and strain drink two to three cups daily
for wounds make the tea and use a clean cloth and soak the apply to the affected areas
Making a tea with raspberry leaves can do allot of good and you do use the leaves off the berry bush pick them and wash them and then dry them on papertowel and make sure they are totally dry so they do not mold and you can keep them over the winter.
Raspberry leaf tea you use 2 teaspoons of the leaves to one cup of boiling water and steep for ten min's and strain.
Raspberry leaf will help to stop bleeding so it will help with the brusing
drinking a tea made from saffron and ginger tea will strengthen circulation
use dried saffron that you get from the health food store it should be brown or red or dark orange to be of benifit
and use fresh ginger and peal a bit and grate very fine
use two teaspoons of fresh ginger and a pinch of saffron to one cup of boiling water steap for ten mins and strain
you can sweeten with maple syrup or honey or raw sugar or dark brown sugar
