I took my child to the dentist, and he now has a fever??
Question: I took my 4 year old to the dentist yesterday and he had 6 caps put on. (plus he had 2 fillings) Last night he started running a 102 degree fever. I have called the dentist and am waiting for a return call. But do you think that a infection could set in that quick from the procedures done. Maybe he already had a virus starting that I was not aware of?
He just woke up and his temp is normal right now. But I will have to watch it for sure.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answers: Just keep a close eye on his and take his temperature every hour. At first I thought he probably contracted an infection but then you said his temperature broke. Was this with or without a fever reducer such as acetaminophen (tylenol) or ibuprofen? If on it's own-he should be fine. Call the dentist again to be sure. If they don't answer the phone, you could always go down there. You're likely to get better answers in person and as well the dentist or hygenist could have a quick look in your child's mouth to see if there's any inflammation coming on. As far as the virus part of your question goes-no, it's very unlikely unless another patient in the office had a virus which is hardly likely as dentists don't do procedures on people who are sick.
I can't help with a medical diagnosis - But I call the dentist back and demand to talk to him immediately - you may have to take him the emergency room if his temp is that high
Could be either...does the kid have any mouth pain??
If so, it may be there, if not, a cooincidence.
Wow, you should ask for some flouride too...a 4 year old having that much work done?? Incredible...My guess is the child was a milk bottle sleeper...NEVER put a child into bed with a milk bottle...water maybe, not milk....it will rot their teeth & the adult teeth may be bad too...
Could be an infection.. Get him to the doctor. Infection can happen in 24 hours..
Wow! I can't believe the dentist did all that work in one visit. Normally they break it up over a few weeks. But the answer is yes. A child could develop an infection after dental work. But not that quickly I would think. With kids that small it's hard to tell sometimes. I would definately ask the dentist for a prescription for antibiotics. Gosh, what money grubbers some doctors are. A 4 yr old no less. Just make sure you give your child some kids tylenol to keep the fever down. And plenty of 100% juice. Needs the extra C. Good luck.
Sometimes children and adults alike have a reaction from any kind of dental care done. A fever is fairly normal in what you have described, you need to watch your son (as you stated) and give him ibuprofen for children as directed on the box and if starts to have other symptoms make sure to call your son's dentist and let them know. I'm not sure if they gave him antibiotics before the procedures but from the sounds of it they didn't. He may not need any but you are right to watch him carefully.
When anyone has a procedure done in his or her mouth it is very possible to develop a fever because of the bacteria in our mouth, just watch him like your doing and make sure to have his dentist chart this in his chart for the next time.
