My five month old has been coughing with phlegm, but what i get from the doctor is tylenol, any suggestions??
Question: She has the cough for a week now but all that is prescribed is infant tylenol. any other ways to help my child get rid of the phlegm?
Answers: This is what I did when my kids were babies. Turn on the shower as hot as it will go. Do not get in there with her just sit in the bathroom as the room fills up with steam that should loosen some of the gunk in her chest. And I know this sounds weird but it really works. Put Vick's vapor rub on the bottom of her feet only and then put a pair of white socks on her. I thought my Nana was nuts when she told me to do this but it really did work. Thank goodness for Nana's. Good luck, hope she feels better soon.
Try an over the counter decongestant. The reason the doctor didn't prescribe antibiotics is that it's probably a viral infection, which don't respond to antibiotics and should resolve themselves in a few days.
How long have you been using this doctor? Are you comfortable with him/her? Does he/she appear to be compitent to you? If you have had this doctor for a while and he/she has been on the money with his/her diagnoses & treatments, I trust your doctor has medically justifiable reasons for his actions. However, if you have not had much experience this doctor, I strongly suggest you take your baby for a second opinion to another physician. This does not sound like something you should be taking lightly. Coughing that produces phlegm is a good thing, because it clears the lungs of the mucus, but for it to last for a long time does not sound good.
Take action immediately! All the best to you and your baby
