What are some symptoms of infection??
Question: For example, if someone had a gash in their arm and it was exposed to dirty sea water, what would be some signs of infection?
Would it get puss, would it burn and sting, etc? And if untreated in any way, is it serious enough to be fatal?
Thanks so much for all help! :D
Answers: It depends on what kind of bacteria or virus has infected it. My daughter got an ingrown toenail and it got red and puffy first, then got puss. The puss just looked like a white area on her skin. The doctor said it was either a staph or strep infection in her skin. He said the same strep virus that gives strep throat can give a skin infection too.
An infected area can swell, it can smell bad. If you see a line radiating from the site then go to a hospital immediately.
An infection can get into your bloodstream too. If you have something that you suspect is infected and then you get a fever, you should go to the hospital right away then too. I had a urinary tract infection that got into my bloodstream and showed up at the hospital with 104.9 temp ... I'm lucky it didn't kill me. It can happen with any infection.
If you're curious about what infections look like, Google it and then choose images But you'd better have a strong stomach :o)
I guess I was going on and on without actually answering your question. So here it is:
Who knows what is in dirty sea water. But if it burns, it could be the salt you got in it :o)
Get some topical antibiotic cream, and use your best judgement. If it looks bad then go to the doctor.
Yes, an infection always has the potential of being fatal. If there's any question, then go see your doctor.
Well... It could look like a numerous of things if infected... really read and puffy around the outside of the cut, might sting or even burn if certain things hit it... how deep is the cut? if really deep I would get medical help, if not then I would put some triple antibiotic ointment on it and cover it up, keep all nasty things from being able to get in it... and if you did go swimming in dirty water just flush with peroxide and follow the things above... if it starts to become painful, or spread bigger, get some help...
if the water was salty water, it probably was stinging anyway. An infected wound usually becomes swollen, red, possibly with pus, and eventually a fever. It is possible for infection to become fatal, but uncommon. More common would be an infection requiring IV antibiotics. Without seeing the wound it is hard for me to say. I suggest you put Neosporin on the wound and keep it covered for a few days. Once it looks like it is healing, you don't have to keep it covered. If you feel like it is infected it needs to be seen about. A few oral antibiotics would sure beat IV antibiotics and/or surgery. Good Luck.
