Having a problem with one of my pierced ears??
Question: Five years ago, I got my ears pierced, and the hole in my right ear has recently been giving me problems. It's not red and it doesn't hurt, so I'm not sure that it is infected, but slimy, yellow stuff comes out of the hole, similar to earwax, and I am afraid to take my earrings out for a long period of time, because the hole might close. I use medicines, neosporin, campho-phenique, etc., but I've run out of ideas. Should I let the hole close up and re-pierce that one ear, visit my doctor, visit my dermatologist, or even the place where I got my ears pierced? Thanks for your help.
Answers: A five year old piercing shouldn't be doing this unless you've worn earrings that someone else who had an infection, wore or you are allergic to a pair of earrings you have had on.
Taking the earring out won't cause the hole to close up right away...it may close after a few months. I've had my ears pierced a number of times...last was in the upper ear cartiledge. If I wear earrings with nickel I'll get a similar reaction ... use sea salt in warm water and saturate the piercing at least 3 times a day...then follow this with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide...with the earring removed if you think this is the cause. The ear may be crusting right now if so, it's most likely the earring causing it.
Good luck...if it doesn't improve within say 5 days with the above...see your doctor you may need a stronger cream or treatment.
Addition: A fresh piercing isn't to have peroxide on it...this is a 5 yr old piercing...it isn't needing healing it'd needing to be rid of a reaction/irritation, therefore Peroxide is one of the better ways to rid infection. Over 20 years experience with all kinds of piercings - ears, nose, belly buttons, tongues, eyebrows, labrets etc. so far all piercings have worked out just fine with the above method except only eyebrows and my ears have become irritated to the extent this that peroxide was necessary.
You have an infection, it's common, just clean it every day, after your shower with peroxide. Clean your earrings before you put them in too.
Start out with your doctor. He/She will be the best person to determine a course of action/treatment plan. Good Luck.
sounds infected to me ...use hydrogen peroxide and a q-tip
well you need to take it out and put proxcide or alocol in it. and change the earing you are wearing. if they are fake you are most likely allergic to the earings. but i would let it heal and then repeirce them but use real ones if you are not wearing real ones you do have an infection so that does need to be taken care of. Good luck.
I have had that also, and had my ears pierced 30 years ago. Take the earring out, soak it in jewelry cleaner overnight. When you shower in the morning, make sure you clean your ear lobes really well. It's possible it could be shampoo or conditioner in there. This is good to do about once every week or so. Good luck.
I don't know who told you to use peroxide, but that was not a smart idea. Don't use anything on your ear that will make your skin heal from the outside first. Hibicleanse helps wounds heal from the inside out. (You can get it a Walgreens or CVS) It is for piercings in the belly button and ears. If you use peroxide it will heal the outside, sealing in the infection.
If you choose to put anything in your ear while it is healing, it probably needs to be pure gold or surgical steel. Costume or cheap jewelry could irritate the problem.
I have had many ear piercings and can i firstly say using medicines or peroxide on them will mess them up even more! Use salt water which is a natural cleaner and the body's best healing aid.
It doesn't sound infected and usually with infection you will get pain and an inflamed area (red!) It may just be an allergy to the earings you are wearing which have irritated it and this would be the body's way of getting rid of any trace.
I wouldn't personally visit your doctor or a dermatologist because i don't think it is needed. If you want go and see your piercer or a piercer who will probably give you the same advice i have (i am currently training).
I wouldn't worry about it but be careful what metals you put in your ears even hypo-allergenic gold can effect some people (my body rejects it.)
But usually the best metals are 9 carat gold, silver or plastic all of which can be bought from a piercing studio or good jeweler. Good Luck and try not too worry!
