My niece is 10 and overweight what can I do to help??

Question: My niece is only 10 abd weighs 150 pounds. Her mom does nothing about it but grandma tries the mom ruins what good grandma does. Its not about them obviously what they are doing is not working. This little creep in her class told her she was hot, and she said boy no one has said that to me before. this creep talks about sexual things beyond his age. I
'm worried that she will end up with creeps as a teenager. I'm her aunt and I'm disabled but I want so much to help this sweet bubbbly litttle girl with a great sense of humor before she decides to do anything to have friends/boyfriens. She has seen a doc but I am worried about diabetes. He recommended exercises but grandma tries to do them withher and mom takes her somewhere and so much for excercising. Mom spends all her time working or with fiance./ She makes promises and doesn't keep them and her little girl is crushed. She is very depressed and she says she eats because she is lonely. My 18yrold spends time with her tho. Im so sad
Answers: That's really sad.
Maybe your 18 year old can spend MORE time with her. Take her for a bike ride, go for a walk, go to the park and play--try to get the little girl active!
It's really hard to help when the mom doesn't do her part. Maybe you can invite your niece over for dinner. Cook a healthy meal for her. Encourage her to join sports and get involved in activities. Maybe it'd be good for her to join a martial arts school. I mean, the boys aren't going to be creeps with her when she can show off what she can do! Martial arts will also help improve her confidence AND it's great exercise!☺

Keep an eye on her. Have an open door policy with her and make sure she knows she's welcomed at ANY time! Remind her of all the good things about her--how beautiful she is, how pretty her smile is, how you like her hair, how you just love the shirt she has on. Keep the communication open--call her often. BE INVOLVED--she needs you!

Best of luck to you, your family and your niece!!☺

(Been there, done that!)
She's eating emotionally because of her sadness. It's a dang shame her mother doesn't wish to help her. Your niece has to want to lose the weight or nothing will work. Even if the mother helped her. She is WAY too young for a boyfriend but I agree...if a boy gives her the attention that she so badly craves from her mother (and doesn't seem to get) she might hook up with him. That would be really bad. Just make yourself available for her to talk to and if your 18 year old can talk to her, that would be great.
this seems like an extremely sad situation. Firstly, you need to keep her self esteem high and constantly tell her how beautiful and intelligent she is. Secondly, step in as a mentor and talk to her about this creepy boy, and talk to her about knowing when a situation becomes dangerous and how these kinds of creeps can hold her back from being what she wants to be in life.

Secondly, with the exercises, it is really upsetting that her mom doesn't realize the health risk that her little girl is enduring. I would suggest talking to her mother about it and making sure, even if it takes a little more effort on your part, that she is getting daily activity.

Your niece's weight problem seems to be brought on emotionally more than anything, so just be there for her A LOT. Have a girls day out and go get your nails done and go out to lunch. show her that you really care about her a lot and go out of your way to show it. As long as this ten year old knows that she is loved by a lot of special people, and exercises a bit, her weight problem should be a thing of the past.
the majority of overweight 10-13 year olds grow up to be overweight adults. since she is not your child there isn't much you can do as you have no control over what she eats at home or how much exercise she gets.

sounds like the mom has no business raising a child and is more concerned with her own affairs
We are all on a calroieking diet, and everyone has lost over 15 pounds so far.

I lost 105 pounds in 6 months. Here is how I did it.
1. Every morning get up and walk for 45 minutes. You can start with less time, but you want to get up to 45 minutes, and it must be fast walk. You want your heart rate to go up. It must be in the morning, it kick starts your metabolism.
2. I cut out Red Meat, and fatty foods. Boneless skinnless chicken breast, baked, or grilled, rice and vegetables (steamed).
3. Eat half. Just eat half of what you normally eat. Put 1/2 on your plate, and put the rest away. Cook less. When you go to fast food, get salads only. Or grilled chicken. No fries, only diet soda. Or water.

It will work, once you get into a routine, you will get hooked on the results, and you will keep the routine. It has been over a year for me.

Also start counting your calories. Write them down. You would be amazed as to how much more aware you are of your caloric intake, if you actually write it down. We recently discovered a site that offers a great program that counts calories, as well as keeps track of everything. It allows multiple users, so everyone in the family can keep track. They offer a free 7 day trial, and so far I am very impressed with the product. Try the 7 days and see. It allows you to add the exercise that you do during the day, which increases the amount of calories you can take in. Very Cool!!

Stay motivated, and get up and walk every day. I seriously lost all my weight starting off my day on my walk.

Good LUCK!
Get in her involved in something like Tae Kwon Do. She might enjoy it. Find a program that enables you to take her maybe twice a week. The stuff she eats is a major factor as well. visit www.lightemuptkd.com for a sample about Tkd Schools and what exactly it is.
Tell her to try this steps
Exercise everyday like jogging around the block
Skip meals. Eat 2 times per day than 3 times per day
Dont eat until you're full
Eat fruits at night if your hungry.
Drinks lots of water and stop all the fast food and chocolate.
There are more tips and info.
there's a video on success fitness too.
