No starches?No dairy?No anything?!??

Question: My family has a history of diabetes and heart disease as well as obesity(not THAT obese mind you).My mom says that I can't have starches because they contain sugar. She doesn't want me to have milk because it has sugar. She suggests fruits and vegetables but they have sugar too!

She suggests me to only stick with protein and vitamins.I know this doesn't seem right because I try to limit my sweets...which I only get like once a week(1 serving) to help me with diabetes and having whole grains to help my heart.

My question is:Is my mom right?Should I just quit on most food groups and stick to only one? What would be a recommending serving for someone like me?
Answers: No, only vitamins and protein! That's crazy. Any sugars found in fruits and vegetables are natural sugars your body needs. Now, if you eat only fruit, then that's not good. You need a balance. If anything I would go easy on breads, pastas, rice, etc. Only eat whole grains, nothing processed. Also, proteins are good but if you eat them with a grain and vegetable then your body will process and utilize the nutrients better. Stay away from all sugar! I went dairy free and few months ago and feel so good! But going dairy free also means making sure your getting those vitamins in the other good foods you eat. If you eat this way, you will NOT have problems with diabetes and/or heart disease. If you eat this way and have occasional treats, you should still be okay. It's eating processed junk all the time and no exercise that really are bad.
Wow... I would say have everything in moderation... That seems a little extreme to cut ALL of that stuff out of your diet!

Make sure you get some exercise and eat healthy, but don't cut out everything like that. If you lack other nutrients, you may end up with some other thing besides the diabetes and heart disease!
sucks man
Look into the glycemic index. It helps you eat low sugar. That way, if you are not diabetic but want to control sugar, you can do so. Veggies are the healthiest thing on earth, so find some that have a low sugar count. Your heart won't be helped by eating only protein and vitamins. Dairy isn't necessary, but make sure you get calcium and vitamin D.
no, you need a well balanced diet. But as far as dairy I would limit myself on the dairy because of the heart disease. the sugar in milk wont hurt you that bad. the sugar in fruits is best but you cant have too much of that either though. I am a personal trainer and I tell everyone this. Dont eat anything in a box or can. Nothing processes at all. IF IT DOESNT GROW DONT EAT IT.
