Are sugary food and drinks bad for you if you do a lot of exercise and are fit??

Question: I would say I'm moderately fit - I swim or row every second day and get around everywhere by foot. I also eat fairly well - lots of fruit and veges, and I only have sweet foods on 'special occassions' - once or twice a week. However, sometimes I find it hard to eat enough food to keep myself full, and if I look at how much I eat compared to how much energy I need, I'm guessing that I'm probably not getting enough food.

So, my question is whether it is okay to eat and drink unhealthy foods like sugary soft drinks and chocolate? Is a can of coke a day too much?

Everyone makes them out to be bad. Is this just because they've got a lot of energy and will make you fat if you eat too much, or are the products in fact bad no matter who you are?

What about diabetes? My family has a couple of cases of mild diabetes later in life. Currently I'm 25. Can sugary drinks and the like cause diabetes, or is it sugar and energy in *excess* of your daily needs that are the cause?

Thanks.
Answers: moderation is what I always say .. the reason you feel hungry is your body wants or needs nutrition .. processed sugars satisfy you for only a short time ..processed sugars are simple carbs ( white sugar-flower -beer - etc.) where things like natural fruit are complex carbs they process slower and contain nutrients so they will satisfy you longer .. I actually eat organic to avoid the excess use of hormones and pesticides ... because your body can only eliminate so many toxins in a period of time ... give the body what it needs and it will take car of you ... if your hungry , eat an apple or a banana or some raw veggies .. if your on a date have the cheese cake .. as far as sodas there's 14 tea spoons of sugar in every 12 once you drink and the P. H. Level is 2.6 very acidic can you imagine what that is doing for your calcium in your bones .. I say eat some junk but flush it threw with lots of water .. and again I am different ..I drink lot of distilled water ..because it actually acts as a magnet for toxins , metals , and a lot of other junk you have in your body .. stay healthy
Remeber - about chocolate, sugar, etc.........Everything in Moderation! If you really crave a lot of sugar, it could possibly be a sign of early diabetes. I have known diabetic people who crave sweet foods and drinks. Also, we ate 'natural' sugars for many years - the kinds found in oranges, peaches, apples, etc. Refined sugar is a bit strange to the body, especially in large amounts. The body compensates by excreting insulin, from the pancreas. Try to keep to more natural sugars, such as fruits. Also, to feel more full, try substituting more carbohydrates for some of the sweet foods.
Every time you consume a sugar product or can of coke...you are defeating and tearing down all the good things you are doing...eventually it will catch up with you. You may not gain weight (NOT ALL PEOPLE DO), but that does not mean you are healthy. It is not healthy to consume a can of coke a day. It is like consuming poison...all the exercise and right eating won't make up for the poison in your system...my recommendation is to substitute those unhealthy products for something that is not so detrimental.
I drink a lot of soda and i am not fat at all... but i am strong...i think because i do some exercise like push-up and pull-up or sit-up...Diabetes is not the problem.....u dont'have to care about that too much..because u said u do swim and go anywhere by foot that is mean u do exercise a lot so it's ok but don't eat too much junk food....
Stuff like that are of no benefit to you healthwise, so don't debate them, just cut them out of your diet.

Use alternatives like Lipton Diet Iced Tea or Sprite Zero.
in moderation they are okay but try to eat more fruit and use sugar substitutes like splenda.
Yes, they are bad. They spike your blood sugar. If you have a family history of diabetes you should avoid refined sugar (this includes white bread, white pasta, white rice, milk and yogurt too!)
Take everythin in moderation.A can of coke a day is allright.
