Anybody want to join in my committment to eating more healthfully??
Question: I was just reading an article online about how rampant type 2 diabetes in the US is. My uncle actually has type 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes which used to be referred to as 'juvenile diabetes' but adults albeit rare can get type 1 as well) and my aunt on the other side of the family has type 2 ('adult onset' but kids who are overweight can get it as well).
The article mentioned that potatoes, namely fries as the example was when asked by the fast food worker 'if you want fries with that' to say no due to the high glycemic index (which tends to make the blood sugar quickly spike and then drop which can put one in more danger of type 2 diabetes). I love potatoes btw :) It also mentioned that white bread has a high glycemic index as well and that those simple carbs, that tend to spike the blood sugar high and then plummet can put someone at risk for type 2 diabetes. It got me very worried, and I'd like to make a (com)pact with myself and whomever wants to join :) Thanks
Answers: Ya - I already try to eat healthy...so I'll join you. I stopped eating potatoe chips and fries a long time ago. But I still eat mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. They're good for you if you make them right (i.e.: without all the buttery fat:)
It's so sad how obese and unhealthy America is becomming. I walked into 6th grade physical education at school (the teacher is one of my friends), and there were a bunch of kids walking. She has them run for about 7 minutes, and it was about 2 minutes into it. Almost half the class was walking!!! Now, I know this teacher well, and she does a very good job of pushing students to work hard and not slack off. So I asked her, Why are so many walking? She said Because they're so freakin lazy. I've had several calls from parents this week, saying that 'I've been to boot camp before, and you're running this p.e. harder than a boot camp!!' Wow. Oh, btw, after running 7 minutes, they were going to play dodgeball, because they get to have at least one game day a week...
sure. I will. Already went from a size 14 to an 8...but could use the buddy system to get to a 6. If you want a 55 year old lady to join in.
