Can one soda a day really increase my chances of getting diabetes??

That is a myth. In reality, obesity increases your chances of becoming diabetic, the amount of sugar in your soda does not. Soda is not really good for you, but if it is in the context of an otherwise healthy and varied diet, you will not cause yourself any harm to drink a soda every day.

This is ridiculous. Many people have 4-5 soda a day, and they don't have diabetes. There are people who drown their coffee with sugar every time they drink it, and they don't have diabetes. Ask a health care professions to explain diabetes to you.
I am not sure about all the ramifications of whether or not it will cause diabetes down the road, but one thing for sure, take a look next time you drink one at the content. Not only is sugar high (40+ carbs for one drink when 40 carbs is more than enough for a whole meal plus dessert) but the sodium is worse. Best bet would be to drink something like Diet Rite if you have to drink soda, Diet Rite has even come out with new flavors too, and they don't have anything in them at all, no sodium and no sugar either. If you indulge everyday in sugar and white flour foods(white rice, pasta,white bread, potatoes,etc.) then you can increase your risk.
It probably depends on what the rest of your daily diet consists of, if there is a family history of diabetes, your personal health, etc.
I'd say alone it probably wouldn't have a huge effect, but put with other risk factors, it could be the straw that broke the camel's back...so to speak...
If you really fear that occuring, then cut out the soda or switch to diet...it's not worth risking your health over...

There are many safeguards you can take. Eat a balanced diet combined with the proper exercise. This reduces your risk greatly, by simply staying fit and healthy.
I think the media causes some hysteria in regards to living healthy. All of the medical studies that come out, often conflict w/truth and the media thrives on that.
well drinking a lot of soda or any type of excess sugar is never good for you. but honestly who is going to give up eating that stuff it just tastes too good for that. maybe try to cut down a little bit and make sure that you are exercising. the only connection i can make between the sodas and diabetes is that over time you would become obese which could lead to your pancreas shutting down.
