How long does it take for the pain after a filling to go away??
Question: 2 weeks ago, I had a shallow cavity filled with a white composite. The filling was built too high and consequently, my jaw started aching a few days later and the tooth became sensitve to cold. A week ago, I went back to the dentist and he shaved off some of the filling. The dull ache decreased but has not gone away completely (also the sensitivity to cold is still there). I don't get sharp pain with cold, but rather, a dull ache. The dentist said sensitivity was normal but I'm afraid I might need a root canal. Even though this was a shallow filling, it was adjacent to a much deeper feeling and when he was drilling, I felt a little pain. I'm worried the pulp became inflamed during the process.
Answers: Your dentist should've noticed any pulp/or transference of infection; call his office and insist on getting feedback about that.
However, it sounds like it is just that, a dull ache.
For dull aches: arnica gel (since the cream or oil) might be too greasy for your face. You can get it at the health food store for about 8.00. A little bit will do! Apply on the OUTSIDE of where the ache is coming from; that should help.
You may have to reapply several times a day; totally harmless.
If ache does NOT improve, I hate to say it, but more may have to be filed off. I use totally non-metal materials for my teeth now. Compostites have gone back to having some nickel, or another metal in them.
Some dentists, or hygenists, just can't get it a right fit even when they are good.
Hope that will help. It helped a friend of mine who had some extensive work done, and her face was horribly bruised on the outside.
She used the gel,it had been weeks since the work, and the bruising went away in 3 days !!!
For sharp pain, until you can get to the dentist: clove (just part of one) and suck on it; or clove oil--available at the drugstore.
For clenching teeth: put the tip of your tongue against the back of your top teeth right above the gum line. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it will stop the clenching/grinding of teeth. If you see a chiropractor, have him adjust you for TMJ.
Sounds like you may need to find another dentist. You should not be in that much pain from just getting a filling. I have had numerous fillings and have only had a bit of sensitivity right after the procedure was done. I had some pain underneath one of my fillings (it was an old silver filling) and come to find out I had an infection underneath the filling which was treated with an antibiotic and then the filling replaced. Best of luck to you!
There should be no pain. I got one recently and the dentist told me to call him if it bothered me in any way. So you should call your dentist and let him/her know.
